Chapter Twenty-Eight

Noelle folded her body into the corner of the couch and stared at the dust bunnies rolling across the floor in the draft, as the scene in the woods looped through her mind.

Despite the fact that she had no proof, she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone else had been out there. Tyrese would tell her she imagined it, that she’d shaped monsters out of shadows, and maybe she had.

It was possible no one had been there at all, and she’d panicked over nothing.

Nothing? Her imagination punched her brain with the image of the girl’s hair and fingers rising out of the earth.

Those details were going to haunt her dreams. But nighttime imaginings weren’t a concern right now; the concern was that someone violent and twisted had been in those woods only days ago and might still be in the area.

And she’d gone out there alone. After dark. Without telling a soul.

Stupid, Noelle. Stupid.

Whoever murdered that girl could’ve killed her and buried her in the woods alongside the other unmarked grave. He could’ve knocked her out and dragged her away for some purpose better left unimagined.

She rubbed at her face and released a trembling breath, drawing the attention of the female deputy standing like a century in the foyer.

“Miss, you all right?”

Just having an emotional meltdown, Noelle thought, but she smoothed away the dampness beneath her eyes with her fingertips and nodded. “I’m fine.”

But she wouldn’t be if she continued to sit here with nothing but her thoughts for company. She could feel depression inching closer, waiting for an opportunity to wrap around her. She was too tired for an emotional battle, which meant she needed a distraction.

———

Derek knocked on the back door, pausing a beat before stepping into the empty kitchen.

Four mugs of tea steeped on the counter, the scent of peppermint and vanilla filling the room. Brewing tea must be one of Noelle’s coping methods for stress. A handwritten note sat beside the mugs.

In case you guys need something warm to drink that won’t keep you up all night.
